Brecon Young Firefighters achieve their first Duke of Edinburgh’s awards (May 2011)

Nine youngsters from Brecon YFF were presented their certificates and badges recently having gained the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s award. Powys County Fire Commander Jonathan Evans said “It’s great to see the young fire fighters getting this award for all the effort and commitment they have put into the scheme over the last year or so. Not only have they enhanced their training as young fire fighters as part of the award they have also helped various charity groups and individuals in the community as part of their volunteering section. This has made a real contribution to society and a great way for the young people to give something back to their community”. The other Sections completed included physical activities and taking part in a two day walk or expedition where they have to carry all their equipment and food for an overnight camp. The group leader District manager David Sheppard said “ This is the first group of young people from Brecon Young Firefighter scheme to have completed the Bronze DofE and I and the other instructors are extremely proud of their achievement. The group hope to go on to do the Silver award this year. I would also like to thank all those involved in supporting the group particularly the Wales Air Ambulance who we worked closely with on the voluntary section.” Brecon Young firefighter scheme still has some spaces for young people between 13 and 17 and anyone interested should contact us on 01792505049 or see or web site mawwfire.gov.uk where they can find more information and an application form.
